Disappearing Architecture

The “Paromlin” factory is one of the most important monuments of industrial architecture in Zagreb. It was built in 1907 as one of the first examples of reinforced concrete used in construction. However, after a fire in 1988 it became neglected and is currently an eyesore. Since 1980 there have been countless ideas for the rebuilding of the “Paromlin”; some of them proposed a technical museum, art gallery, museum of modern art etc., but nothing came to existence. In 2013, as a consequence of neglect by city authorities, a part of the construction collapsed, and another one was torn down. Until this day, the “Paromlin” remains in dire need of renovation.
